Our History
At PS 456, we proudly honor Elizabeth Jennings (1827-1901), a trailblazer for civil rights, and school teacher whose legacy continues to inspire our community today. Jennings made history by challenging racial segregation on a streetcar that advanced public transportation desegregation in New York City. Beyond her courageous activism, Jennings was also a dedicated educator who founded a kindergarten for African American children, promoting educational opportunities in a time of widespread inequality. Her spirit of resilience and commitment to justice continues to guide our mission at PS 456.
Elizabeth Jennings’ lives on through our dedication to equality and education.
